This post has been 2+ months in the making...
I draft a copy every other week, only to have downloading issues, and always give up! Today, Friday the 13th, is my lucky day!

You, my regular visitors, knew of my beloved Bandit, whom I lost in November, 2010.
Just shy of the 1-yr. anniversary of his passing, Hubba Hubba surprised me with a puppy! Another Coton de Tulear...this time, a girl!

Meet Chantilly Lace! We call her Tilly.
She arrived in my arms October 19th, at 12 weeks old.

Five fluffy pounds of pure joy!

Enjoying her first romp in our freaky early snowstorm, October 30th.

And learning early to always smile for Mommy's camera.

When she escaped from the playpen, this is what I came home to.
An expensive collection of chew toys! But who can stay mad at that face?

Waking up every morning to her deer alarm has been fun...yeah!

Daylilies Galore

For those of us that LOVE the genus Hemerocallis...we look forward to the month of July. It's peak bloom time in my zone 6 garden, and this year the display is spectacular! I've spent a fortune on sprays to keep the deer at bay...as daylilies are on their list of top 3 goodies. But, still...there are mornings when I'm out mush-mummy-ing and just break down in tears when scapes are stripped bare.

Like this beautiful clump of Scarlet Orbit under my garden sign. The morning after this photo was taken (thank goodness!), nothing but naked stems! Makes me soo mad!

Quiet Splendor

Once in a rare while, I find myself with a free afternoon. A break from the everyday duties that fill my calendar. What should I do?! For garden nuts like us, it's a no-brainer! A garden tour, of course!

Forty minutes later, I'm here! A beautiful woodland garden created by Leonard J. Buck and Zenon Schreiber. A 30-yr. collaboration that began in 1940's, encompassing 29 acres with a 2.5 mile walking trail. They designed the garden by feel and eye, with no plans on paper...my kind of gardening!

Just a $3 donation gains you entrance into paradise...can't beat that! Let's go, shall we?

Already a split in the trail...let's go this way! With the huge canopy of trees and the sun hitting just so, it was the perfect day!

When in Spain...

Do as the Spaniards do...take a siesta!
Otherwise you'll fall asleep at the dinner table. I speak from experience...lol! Our four days in Barcelona went by in a flash, but, I'd do it again in a heartbeat!

Our flight course took nine-hours, plus the 6 hrs. ahead of my body clock didn't help.

I was too excited to nap and witnessed this beautiful sunrise.

Spring at it's peak so the timing was perfect!

I took so many photos of buildings and statues that my neck was kinking up...within the first 2 hours!

How would you like to have this flower market in your neighborhood?

We took amazing cathedral and museum tours but, of course, my favorite...the gardens! Wisterias are not highly scented but I would love to add this vine to my garden.

I snapped this mountain of monuments from the freeway. The dead are very much alive in these hillside cemeteries.

Within two blocks from our hotel was this famous landmark, Casa Batllo.
Designed by renowned architect Antonio Gaudi. The balconies were designed to resemble skulls. More on him later...

Springtime In Paris...

It's been three long weeks since my visit to the Philadelphia Flower Show and I finally have a free hour to share a few of my favorite photos. Yes, theme was 'Springtime In Paris', and Ooh-la-la...was it ever! One of the best years in displays. I know...you're laughing because I say that every year!

The variety of tulips were spectacular! These bright reds were my favorite!

Hard to believe that the much-anticipated Flower Show in NJ has come and gone! The 4-day-only event left me scrambling to re-arrange my schedule so I could attend. I mean, how could I possibly miss it?!

This year's theme...can you guess...?
Gardens on Broadway! The entrance display had major impact, as did the overpowering smell of manure/mulch! Perfume to garden enthusiasts...lol! Talk about an instant high!

I snapped the more popular Broadway titles, but, upon review, they actually didn't hold much interest.

Like this one...a shapeless arrangement with plastic slippers...

This water garden caught my eye though. Love that little fisherman!

Four hrs. of blissful touring and a few impulse purchases later, I'm back out in winter temps but thankful for the beautiful glimpse into Spring! And, call me crazy, but I enjoyed inhaling that sweet scent of mulch, lingering in my hair and clothes on the drive home! Only a few weeks 'til the Philadelphia Flower Show! Anyone else going...?

Frosty The Garden

I'm sure I speak for all of us when I say "ENOUGH already!" As peaceful and pretty as fresh fallen snow can be, I am really, really over it! The view out my window is still mostly of a white landscape, but, by weekend's end, I will see the soggy lawn...YAY!

I'm very happy this glass ornament has not cracked...yet!

Two weeks ago, I woke to the sound of chirping! This little fella somehow snuck in and made himself at home. His flight pattern went from ceiling fan to this potted flower to my quilt! Every window and door held open for his escape went unnoticed. It took two hours to finally shoo him out! Strangely enough, this happened not once, but three times that week...weird or a sign of luck?

The only sign of life are blooms being forced indoors. Paperwhites potted up at 3 week intervals throughout the winter months keep the blues at bay. The last dozen opened just in time for Valentine's Day but are quickly fading. Don't forget to slice off the root end to keep the stems from getting too leggy...a trick I learned over the years. I love their cheerful faces but the scent can be overpowering and headache inducing...

Hope you all survived the winter blahs and are as anxious for Spring as I am!

What's blooming around the pond...

...haha! Gotcha! For those that know I live in New Jersey, were you scratching your head?! Life around the pond is non existent...at least above the surface. The only flowers I'm growing now are the indoor variety. Paperwhites, amaryllis and poinsettias. They keep us gardeners from going stir crazy, right?

Here he is close up. Our pond protector! A carving we won from a raffle at the New Hampshire Craftsman's Fair back in August.

Pond? What pond? Our 11x16 pond is completely ice and snow covered. Well, except for the bubbler creating oxygen for the kois. Keep your fingers crossed for me that the family of 8 are all accounted for come April. And notice the little footprints leading to the water? They're not mine!

Chasing a sunset a few days ago, I had to hit the brakes hard as 3 deer darted right in my path and as I looked up the hill, I saw a fourth. She was probably saying "hurry up, the view up here is amazing!". A heart racing moment, but, knowing me, I just went for the camera.

We all know how time crawls when we're staring at the clock, but, I can't help it...I'm starting my countdown for Spring! Just don't hit the snooze button!

A New Dawn...

...to a New Year! Happy 2011, ALL!

On days when my little one (who happens to be a head taller than me!) needs that extra 15 minutes on the snooze button, I willingly agree (most of the time!) to drive her into school. Especially on clear mornings when I know the sunrise will be worth capturing on film.

A detour through this reservoir is my reward on the way home. If I'm not too lazy, I'm dressed properly for a little hike along the shore. But, more often than not, I'm in my winter boots and robe. After all, who's nutty enough to be out and trekking about at 7am?! Well, other than yours truly!

But for the last sunrise of 2010, I ventured out for that purpose alone. Memories of warm breezes and tropical palms are fading fast but I'm not complaining. Sunscapes framed by white pines are just as intense and heartwarming. Beauty from a different kind of shoreline.

And just when I was thinking...what a shame, no one else is witnessing this amazing view...I spy a lone fisherman. He rowed out and with a turn of the oars, put himself smack center of my lens...haha! I wanted to wave and shout "Hi! Isn't the sky gorgeous?!"...forgetting about my wardrobe for a second, but he was quite a distance away...thank goodness!

As I sat there daydreaming and snapping away, my ever dependable camera allowed this one last shot before the battery gave out! How's that for good timing?

Time in the Sun...

I can hardly believe that in two weeks, we'll be saying adiós to 2010! Looking back, there'd been many great milestones, but, also heartbreaking ones. Still, I feel extremely blessed and thankful in so many ways.

The final hurrah this year for me was a vacation I'd been planning almost a year for, and it came at no better time.

So I boarded a plane for a 5-hour flight...

And landed here...in beautiful Mexico!

A Club Med Resort with ALL the bells and whistles. And what made it even more special? It was an all-inclusive vacation with my Zumba family from around the world!

Our days were chock-ful! Eating, drinking and dancing...Zumba style! Of course, camera in tow wherever I wandered, so be prepared for lots of pictures! ;)

Christmas was the furthest thing from my mind even though there were many beautiful poinsettias in the lobby/dining areas. And, sure, there were tree lights, but, somehow, christmas lights on palm trees set a different mood.

All in all, a wonderful vacation under el sol!

Four days later, it's back to reality, winter in NJ! Oh well...
Hey, I can always dream about next year's trip!

Fallin' for You...

I know I'm in trouble when I have to stop and take a photo of every single beautiful tree I cross! Even making myself late for work, classes, and, dare I say, getting my daughter to a party! But, she's a good sport and just rolls her eyes with a "C'mon, Mom!" And no matter how many maple trees I snap, each one takes my breath away! Please, please, tell me I'm not the only nut out there...please!

Most of my garden chores are done, though I've still a 1/2 bushel of daffs to plant...that's roughly a 150 count. Sounds a lot, but, it goes quickly when I group 15-20 per digging.

The Historical Red Mill of Clinton is the most photographic scene when articles are written about NJ. And the home of the Haunted Mill I'm always talking about. Not soo scary in the daylight though, eh?

Flashes of bright orange caught my eye~how could it not?!~and I did one of those skidding stops on the side of the road...lol! Ya just gotta admire the dedication and work that went into this whimsical and fun decoration.

Blooming still in my garden is this Honey Perfume rose.
And with fragrance as musky and intoxicating as they were in the height of summer.

Autumn Joy Sedums are especially rich in color this year. And the bees are still buzzing about.

I love the bright turn of this sumac, Tiger's Eye, I think....

It's been a while...

Even though we are preparing to 'fall back' on the clock, time has a way of springing forward so fast this time of year! I've not yet outgrown the habit of thinking I have plenty of days left to put the garden to bed. Anybody else think this way...?

At least the pond has been netted. But, as you can see, my daily visitors still mosey on by. I caught this guy nosing his way under the net, and man, was he perturbed! Coming within 10 feet and he's still boldly staring me down...the nerve!
Our Koi family of 8 are still present. Though Neo, our blue boy, was camera shy here. They have to start fending for themselves, as major diet restriction starts now. Don't worry, it's actually a good thing...

Mums are what's popping up now. I'm sure I've mentioned that these 'daisy mums' are my favorite!

Beautiful sunrise captured earlier this week

Above tulips and daffodils finally ordered...YAY! As you know, those FALL catalogs start arriving in July, but, if you wait 'til the last mailing in October, the sales are tremendous! A lesson I've learned the hard way...lol. So, I'll have a window of one month to get 400 bulbs planted. Hmmm...somehow, I have a feeling I'll be digging on that 30th day! Better late than never, I guess...

September Morn'....

Could it be possible?! September is here already?! In a blink of an eye, August came sweltering in, coating us in icky, sticky humidity. Blissful for those who love the heat! Me, not so much...
And so unlike me to go a whole month without a post. Though in my defense, I was gone for a good two weeks of it. But, still, thinking I had plenty of time! You all know what THAT's like, I'm sure...

The pond continues to improve as plants mature to oxygenate and promote the perfect balance. Water is crystal clear and the kois now come out of hiding as they see our shadows...feeding time! Even these 'pesky' visitors are fun to watch as they come for their daily drink.

While neglectful on postings, I do have tons of pics from the August file...

The last few roses in bloom...struggling in the heat. They are half the size of earlier blooms but I'll take it!

I'm thrilled with how well these water lotuses are doing! A surprising second flush of blooms ;)

Hope everyone's garden have fared well this summer! Daylilies suffered a bit this season and the only color now in my landscape are Black-Eyed-Susans. But Mum season is upon us...another chance to bring back some color! Happy September, ALL!

Pond Life

There are days when I have the free time to spend putzing in the garden. Be it to weed, deadhead, or provide the much needed watering, I find lately I've not had the desire to do so. Instead, I spend the hours just snapping away ~ hundreds of photos that no one will ever see. It's Good Lovin' garden therapy at it's best! Do you have days like that...it's wonderful, isn't it?!

The new pond and it's inhabitants are thriving! Our school of 8 kois are still accounted for and getting big! Frogs, dragonflies, even the daily morning visits from the 4-legged creatures I'm always complaining about...all bring the pond to life and it's been so enjoyable. Maintenance have been minimal 'though full sun exposure evaporates the water level more quickly than I would like, but, that's easily fixed. Of course I won't tell you about the time I left the hose running for 8 straight hours....OOPS!

I'm soo in love with these water lotuses. In bloom now for two weeks, they are just the most beautiful flowers! Pale, almost translucent pink petals with a deep pink edging~they take my breath away...

Sturdy stems reaching almost 3ft., the blooms are about 6" when fully opened.

So wishing you could reach through and smell how sweetly scented they are!

Look at these cute little Forget-Me-Nots blooming at the waters' edge. Oh, but please don't look at the dead brown moss behind it...lol!

Although the late varieties of daylilies are in bloom, the majority of these beauties have just plain tuckered out. The record breaking hot temps have quickened and shortened bloom season a good two weeks.

Ok, so don't be upset, but, as much as I'd looked forward to the heat of summer, I am now anxious for the coolness of fall. Hmmm...maybe a gentle slap is what I need to snap me out of it...right, Rene? ;)

The Showstoppers of my Garden

July is prime season for daylilies. Yes, there are varieties that bloom as early as April/May, and more and more are being bred to bloom as late as September/October, but, the majority of this beloved plant family will bloom their hearts out in the month of July.

I've not collected any new varieties this year...at least not yet...there's still time! Even with the extra wet conditions we've had this spring, I found quite a few plants not to perform as well as last season. Buds stunted and misshapen, petals not fully opening and color saturation tends to be a little uneven, especially the darker shades. And the reliable branching of scapes and bud count did not meet expectation. Overall, the look of the plant (lots of yellow leaves) isn't as pleasing to the eye.

But, even with all these 'issues', I delight in the faces that open daily to greet me...

Our heatwave has finally relented and I can get back to enjoying the daily chore of deadheading mush-mummies in somewhat cooler mornings...what a relief!

I Love My New....

...Pond! As is my constant (bad) habit, I am forever starting new garden projects only to never have them completed as timely and as grand as I'd originally planned. This project, however, has surpassed even my wildest dreams of a water feature, and it was completed in record time!

As some of you know, I've been wishing for a water feature for the past few years. This Spring, I was adamant that this was going to be THE year! With the best location sited, shrubs cleared, sod removed, I started digging by hand the few hours here and there, but, was getting nowhere fast! With the impending heat and sore wrists setting in, I was just about to give up! But Hubba Hubba came through, and as a birthday surprise, called in the professionals!

So here's our project, gettin' done in less than a week!

Digging to China is easy when you have one of these babies! Actually, the pond, at it's deepest, is only 34"

...at house number 15, there is a garden being neglected. Is it just me or do you feel guilty when you go 4 days without pulling a wayward weed, deadhead a spent bloom, or whisper an "I love you" to your favorite flower of the day? Thousands of Feverfew have taken over 2 of my 3 vegetable beds...yikes!

With my crazy schedule, there's been no entertaining in the garden. The only visitors are these uninvited 4-legged variety.

A broader view would definitely show the neglect...so with the camera set on macro...let's just show the good stuff!

Most mornings, after sunrise, you will find me outdoors, in the garden. Strolling with coffee mug in one hand, camera hanging off the other...taking mental notes of what needs to get done. And, as we all know, May has a LONG To-Do list. If I somehow miss this ritual...my day just isn't the same! You understand, I know you do!
This is the week of the roses! Climbers that didn't get a hard prune in late winter are sky-high! Hmm...maybe that's a chore I can permanently cross off...never have they bloomed so profusely!
This is my favorite climber of all~Zepherine Drouhin! Intense, heady fragrance...knocks your socks off, really! AND, it's thornless! What's not to love?

Too bad this beauty is scentless but it's the 'biggest' rose I grow. Petal count in the hundreds, but the name escapes me...

Clemmies!

No, not the cute, yummy miniature naval variety, but the more beautiful, showy vining perennials of the garden. Of the more than 250 cultivars available, I grow less than a dozen. Growing them is easy! The tricky part is the pruning!

So the three rules of pruning are: Spring bloomers grow on last year's growth, a hard prune after bloom time is key to set next year's buds. Summer and fall bloomers flower on current year's growth so not much pruning is needed...just to shape and clean up the vine as you wish. And lastly, some Clemmies are considered repeat bloomers. A heavy first flush early in the season then sporadically again in the year. Don't prune after first flush, otherwise you'll sacrifice the second set of blooms. Just watch your plants and know which pruning techniques apply.

Now, having said all this, I hardly ever prune my vines! I only clean up dead wood and wilt (disease) as needed! If you are a Clemmie lover, you know that these vines love their feet in the shade and faces in the sun! Heavy mulching is key as well as a good sturdy support. Anything will work~an obelisk, a trellis, an arch, even a tree trunk...with a little chicken wire and coaxing. I even add them in large containers~three stakes added to the center, teepee style and, VOILA! I have many vertical structures throughout the garden for Clemmies, and I laugh to think, just maybe, I'm making up for my lack of stature...lol!

Nelly Moser is one of the most popular varieties of Clemmies. Known for her beautiful shades of pink with a deep mauve center ribbing. What's interesting is the two or so blooms I'm noticing in purple...I don't remember planting two varieties at this trellis. Do Clemmies change color based on PH balance...anyone?

With my hand flat, fingers splayed out, these blooms are even larger!

No wonder she's a favorite!

Going on her 12th year, this pinky/purple is the oldest planted Clemmie in my garden...and the name is right on the tip of my tongue...darn! The white double bloom is Duchess of Edinburgh...added a few years later.

Looks more like a dahlia though, doesn't it?

Having planted Niobe on another trellis, the blooms did not resemble the color description so I planted this second one last fall...still not convinced it was labeled correctly as Niobe is supposed to be a deeper red and bloom later...

Barely a foot tall, she's keeping company with the Forget-Me-Nots..which worked out pretty well I think.

A pretty-in-white that grows against the north wall of the house. I'm not sure of the name~any guesses? Possibly Henryi...?

One of my new favorites is Josephine. Planted just last summer, I'm thrilled with how well she's doing and I love the gigantic pom-pom like center! The seedhead will be quite interesting...

I will have to replace this little trellis with something sturdier. Oh, and that arbor in the background...

You've seen this Clematis Montana Rubens from previous posts but she gets more spectacular every year. Since this is a spring blooming variety, the rule of thumb would be to prune it back hard after bloom time for optimum results, right?

Well, as you can see, I cannot reach the top(!) so she is left to fend for herself. Shhh~don't tell her!

So go ahead, plant your first Clemmie this season, or add more to your collection...you can't go wrong! Best of all, they will reward you with beauty and enjoyment for years to come!

A Special Surprise...

...just in time for Mother's Day! When I plant bulbs en masse, whether they be daffodils or tulips, I usually go for the 'Multi-Mix' variety. Fun to see what eventually blooms, but more so because it's easier on the budget.

This mix had some 'lily' tulips so I was thrilled.

I thought this one to be especially pretty. But then...

something in this border caught my eye! Do you see her? Upon closer inspection...

she's totally unique! Shorter than her neighbors but..ooh!

The one and only bloom with these beautiful markings!

Isn't she a gem? Maybe I'll give in and order this specific variety next Fall~if only I knew what her name is...

A Sea of Blue

Everywhere I look, I see Forget-Me-Nots. Especially in places I did not plant. But, somehow, they look as though they were planned, tucked in for perfect combinations with the other blooms...making my garden especially pretty...just love that!

They are even rampant in my vegetable beds...which I will have to pull out...soon!

Everything's Coming up Roses...

...Lenten Roses, that is!
Hellebores galore! This is a must have perennial if you don't already grow it. The blooms, literally, lasts for months!

I know Spring has sprung when the Star Magnolias are in bloom! Love their delicate faces and fragrance!

And, of course, daffodils...one can never have enough :)

No, this is NOT my yard...I wish!

Blooming forsythias are another favorite sign of Spring. Every other home...at least in my neighborhood..grows them. Golden sunlight on a stick! But do you ever take the time to notice the cool details of a single bloom...

I do leave the wild violets and lamium to bloom for that splash of purple, then it's history! You all know how invasive they can be!

Anyone game for another stroll through the Philadelphia Flower Show? I did mention that I took hundreds of photos, right? Too much of a good thing, I know...but, here we go!

Love this shade of pink Andromeda

Many beautiful porch displays but this was my fave...love the sign!

For those who can grow citrus, you know what a heavenly scent these blossoms exude.

The strong color combo of these floor-als was stunning!

This statuette was quite small...I almost missed her.

I grow anemones in my garden but would love to find this particular color!

A definite highlight was this really cool display of blue-water vases, suspended on wires...such an eye-catcher!

Another highlight of the day was getting to meet my blogging friend, Ginny, and her wonderful mom, Pat! We shared many giggles at the show and a glass of wine over dinner~thanks, girls!

My Favorite~Orchids!

I could probably do 10 posts from the hundreds of photos I took just on orchids alone! The variety and abundance of blooms took my breath away! The lighting, however, made it tricky to capture them in full glory, not to mention waiting for the crowds to thin out as I snapped each view and angle. Thank goodness patience is in my nature...most of the time!

Really cool were the bromeliads and other tropical plants.

It's no wonder this bloom-laddened specimen won 1st Price

Dendrobium 'Spectabile'~described as grotesquely twisted, I found it quite unique and beautiful. A collector's plant costing upwards of $100!

This was much more impressive in person...a deep, deep purple, almost a blue tone to it.

Not true to nature, but this 'orchid tree' was quite impressive!

...of the Philadelphia Flower Show. My limited visiting hours this year kept me from the individual displays of arrangements and the judging tables, so photos are mostly of the large scale gardens.

The Dutch gardens were especially beautiful and creative this year. Instead of tip-toeing through the tulips, how about a trek on your ten-speed...

The bold-colored azaleas were amazing but this pale pink 'tree' really caught my eye.

Passport To The World....

..was the theme for this year's Philadelphia Flower Show! And what a spectacular job they did transporting us through the different countries.

It's always the boost I need when I'm desperately (and impatiently!) waiting for spring to arrive! Once I step into the grand entrance, my breath quickly draws in and my mouth stays in "OOOH" mode for the duration of the tour! Hey, I can't be the only one making that silly face!

And an added bonus this year was getting to meet a very special blog friend from upstate NY, Ginny! "Hi Doll!" I know Wendy and Patsi have posted pictures also...give them a visit, will ya.

So in no particular order, rhyme or reason, these views caught my eye...enjoy!

You just know I took waaay too many photos of the show so there definitely will be more to come! :)

Although wet and windy this weekend~think of the watering our gardens will be getting and you won't mind the forecast so much.

Finally, it's here folks! Can you smell it in the air? Feel it on your face? The brightest and warmest spring day of 2010! Actually, I was shocked to see the temp gauge reach 60 degrees in our area! So hope you all enjoyed part of the day playing outdoors!

I've been very neglectful with my blog visits and postings...not enough time in the day lately with my crazy schedule! However, I was very lucky to have attended the Philadelphia Flower Show this weekend and the inspiration from that alone will kick me into high gear, and I'll be blogging away with a vengeance soon...I hope!

Meantime...here's a little tease for what will be blooming soon in our gardens! And if I didn't say it yet...it's so nice to be with you...guys again! :)

How fortunate was I to spot this beautiful symbol of LOVE just in time for a Valentine's Day post!! So vivid and bright he was against the snowy backdrop of the garden.

Perusing the archives for other inspirations of LOVE, I came across these oldies but goodies. An extra flutter of the heart is always a good thing...enjoy! And speaking of oldies but goodies..this song makes me cry, cry, cry...with tears of joy!

A Walk in the park...

Just when the weather was getting to be somewhat decent, WHAM! Snow and more snow predicted for this weekend...Oh the joys of the Northeast!

This pretty and plump Robin greeted me a few mornings ago. She actually listened when I politely pleaded "don't move, let me get my camera!" Don't we love that?!

Yesterday's snowfall didn't amount to much, but I knew I'd find some pretty scenes at my favorite spot.

The same dock as in the last post...just not so warm and fuzzy.

I had to trek down a hill to get this shot. Imagine how startled I was when a park ranger yelled "Excuse me, Ms. you need to get back to the main road!"...lol! Was he worried I might slip and roll into the water...?! Didn't love that!

No ants...no picnics!

Some of my favorite finds were these sweet gum drops,

It turned out to be a pocketful-day of sunshine and one of my happiest yet of 2010! :)
And as I pulled into the driveway, this sunset was torching the sky.

...that's how I feel when I walk through my garden lately! All growth is at a standstill, and with it, my desire to blog :(
Surely, you can relate...Spring can't come soon enough!
I miss visiting the local nurseries (hi Leslie!) where I can spend hours upon hours just browsing.

Hard to believe it was just a month ago that these pansies were looking soo good. They'll probably be the first plants to sprout come April...So, April, please come!!

And you know that I truly and deeply miss my daylilies!

I miss the sound of laughter and activity of kids in the garden...

...and insect life.

I know it's just barely the end of January, but anyone else sick and tired of Winter as I am?! I long for colorful views out my window...even at dusk.

And bright of day.

Em here enjoying the fruits of my labor...okay, technically, Zepherine Drouhin Rose ;) A favorite climber because it's thornless! And a fragrance that can make you drunk...don't we love that in a rose!

The only colors I'm capturing lately requires one to look up...

So what will it take for me to get my a** in gear and get into the mood to blog again? How about the upcoming flower and garden events that will surely fill up my February/March calendar. Friends, if you are planning on attending the Philadelphia Flower Show (scheduled for February 28 thru March 7th), please let me know. I would love to 'meet-up' with any and all of you! A Beautiful Winters Day...

Waking up with flurries somehow makes my heart a little heavy, but, luckily, no accumulations lately and sun-shiny skies arrive by noon. The frigid temps, on the other hand, we can do without!

These cuties were chirping away early one morning...I'm not a birder so ID help, pretty please?

A nearby pond alive with Canadian Geese! And boy were they noisy! You just know I'm sneaking on private property, don't you?! As soon as they heard movement in the bushes..off they took!

Driving home a few days ago...I literally followed this sunset! Can you blame me? It was beautiful!

What's blooming in my garden right now? Nada! But these freeze-dried peppers still have color!

As do these beauty berries...

And even though I woke up with that icky feeling of coming down with something, accompanied by sniffles and body aches, I already feel better knowing we'll have a 'heat-wave' of 50 degrees today! !YAY! Let's go to the beach! No takers? Well, at least bop those shoulders and boogie down with me to Mr. Blue Sky! ;)

The Final Hours....

This is it! The last day of the calendar year as we know it. Last chance to pen your thoughts and date it 2009, for tomorrow is the start of a new year. A better year!

I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas! Poor Bandit here putting up with our silliness! We had a beautiful white Christmas here in NJ but non-stop evening rain left no trace of it the following day.

This is my view this morning...big, fluffy snowflakes falling as I blog away....makes me want to go out and catch it, taste it. Like most of you, I'll start 2010 with newly determined resolutions...be more patient, kind, helpful, productive. And, the old adage...exercise more, eat healthier, lose that extra ten pounds...you know the drill! But, most importantly, make time for 'myself ' and appreciate the little things in life. Say 'I love you' more often, or better yet, show it(!) and create more laugh lines...those are wrinkles I won't mind living with ;)

So hang up your new calendar...of course you know mine has photos of beautiful gardens...flip to that first page and fill in those boxes with fun activities and special dates (I hope there will be LOTS!) and start your New Year smiling. I even have Spring Fling (Buffalo, NY) penciled in for June ;)

A party with neighbors is on my calendar tonight. Our tradition of a late dinner, champagne when the Big Ball drops followed by decadent desserts...uh-oh, already one resolution gone to the wayside...diet starts tomorrow! And every year, I'm teased for falling asleep on the couch so better make time for a nap later...

Let the countdown begin...tick-tock, tick-tock...

It's here! It's Christmas Eve...can you believe it?!! Another special Holiday for us to pause and give thanks for our incredible blessings of richness in love, family, friends, and good health. And remind ourselves that the true meaning of this celebration lies right here in this word~CHRISTmas...

Our tree is up but it has been a challenge to keep it looking nice! Lacey and Bandit are having a good ol' time knocking off ornaments and even ripping up packages! I bought a Poinsettia Rose for the first time. Amazing what hybridizing can do...remember when they were so silly looking with one stem and one bloom per pot? This 8" pot contains a dozen blooms!

I snapped this just as a gust of wind blew through the branches

Who knew there are over 100 varieties of poinsettias? You're either gonna love or hate my unusual choice here. I always go for the soft pink/cream marbled variety but this year, it's all about the red, Baby! Thanks to Mr. Subjunctive, I recently learned that poinsettias are actually from the Euphorbiaceae family since they produce that milky sap. And what most people consider to be the flowers are actually bracts (modified leaves)... ... it's these tiny clusters in the center that's the flowers! Wrapping will be my main project today, along with a last minute grocery run but raise your hand if you're still heading out to buy presents! Gift cards were the way to go this year (teens are soo picky!) but I'm still hunting for stocking stuffers....

With roads safe for travelling and temps in the 30's to prevent too quick a melt, looks like we'll have a White Christmas after all....

Wishing all you GOOD PEOPLE a blessed and beautiful Christmas. Find peace and joy among your loved ones and spend the long weekend relaxing, chilling, vegging, sleepin' in, eating, drinking, laughing, loving and just plain be merry...that's an order! :)

Baby, it's cold out!

Good Morning friends! The weatherman was correct, for a change, and the anticipated big storm arrived after 1pm yesterday and continued throughout the night. Evening plans were cancelled so I spent many hours knitting by the fire and watching The Wizard of Oz with the girls :)

Our second snowfall this year but the temps, while BRrr today, haven't been too horrendous...

...at least I didn't freeze my fingers off while snapping photos of the garden.

Our steep road gets plowed often, which is great! but our mailbox, more often than not, will end up getting knocked down! Bandit's walk was quite an adventure...poor baby could barely see where he was going. And he looks 'dirty' compared to the pristine snow...lol! About 10 inches accumulated...nice and fluffy, too...at least easy to shovel.

Guess I better sign off and get out there!

Honest Scrap...

My sweet friend, France, has thoughtfully tagged me for an Honest Scrap Award. Since I did a similar meme a few months back...and happily didn't lose my friendly readers...I'll take another chance and share more nonsense about yours truly. So, here goes...

1) Lucky me, as a military brat, I attended 10 different schools before graduating as a junior. A move was actually in the works for my senior year...no kidding! So night classes and after-school work credits earned me an early diploma~two weeks before our move to Florida! Not fond is the memory of transferring schools three times during 6th grade. As a kid, you don't have much say in the matter and all the changes either force you to be a social pariah or overly friendly. I guess I chose the later as I still keep in touch with friends I made in the 3rd grade...while living in Hawaii.

2) Just call me Jack. Specifically, Jack of All Trades ;) Some of my past stints include, but not limited to: legal secretary, bookkeeper, nanny, realtor, medical transcriptionist, florist...etc, etc. Too many interests/skills...none of which earns me a decent living! Currently, I'm a data entry temp and a ZUMBA instructor...weird combo, I know! And, yes, I'm still trying to figure out what to be when I grow up...for I won't ever grow old...teehee!

3) I'm such a cry baby! A touching commercial, an ad for UNICEF, SPCA...pass me the tissues! Relentless teasing is what I get from the gang. In a movie theatre, any emotional scenes (sad or happy!) and I'll feel 3 pairs of eyes staring at me in the dark...snickering! Oh.... 4)...I love Snickers! My favorite form of sugary junk! Pay Day and Almond Joy tie for second. Basically, anything with nuts!

5) I once stowed away in a bookmobile! (A library on wheels...is there still such a thing?) I'd plan my whole schedule around its visits. So, out of eyesight and totally engrossed in my book, (probably a Harlequin Romance ~ remember those?), I hadn't realized it was closing time until I felt the wheels turning! Imagine the surprised look when the driver opened the door to a hysterical, screaming 14-yr. old. That was a hard one to explain to the parents...

6) I have a 'thing' for re-reading favorite books! It doesn't bother me that the pages are well worn and creased. I fall in love with a new passage every time. Same goes with watching favorite movies...over and over. Wasting my time you say? Nah...life's too short, do what you know and love ;)

7) I always mess up when re-telling a joke....always!

8) I cannot...to save my life...whistle! I'm not talking about a tune here, but your basic, pursing of the lips and making some kind, any kind, of noise...nope, just can't do it! Nothing comes out but hot air! And if you're one of those that can use two fingers to create that loud, ear-piercing call, I soo admire you! Go ahead...let's hear it!

9) I watch the Superbowl purely for the commercials! Who's playing...? Teams' stats...? Who cares! I'll root for the side with the cuter quarterback and if I like the color of the uniforms...lol! So this is one of my favorite commercials. Cute huh? And I will happily host the party because I love food...which leads to...

10) I eat when I'm happy. I eat when I'm sad. I eat when I'm nervous, excited, bored, heartbroken. I eat when I'm NOT hungry! I need to find a new all-consuming bad habit...any suggestions? (Please don't say blogging...lol!)

Though fun to share with you more 'honest crap' (say Honest Scrap 3x fast!), I'll refrain from passing along this meme. Many of you would rather NOT be tagged anyway so I'll respect that and just move on...

Saying Goodbye...Part 2

The amazing weather this past Sunday had me doing back flips! Well...ok, lopsided cartwheels were more like it! A beautiful, sunny, and WARM day...perfect for gardening. So, naturally, I spent it hiking, biking and goofing off with friends....lol!A 'must' re-visit to the gorge...with views much different then 2 weeks ago, but, FALL's magic was still seen and felt. The trees along the banks are mostly bare now but beautiful, nonetheless.

Hey, what's this guy doing here? A scavenger hunt, I'm thinking, started by someone with a sense of whimsical. Whatever the reason, it made my eyes go a-hunting a little more closely and several treasures were found.Look at this...I would have totally missed this secret door! Must be where the gnomes and fairies hide in inclement weather....thinking of you, Frances :)

When I came across this beautiful oak tree, the song "Tie a Yellow Ribbon..." started playing in my head, and there it stayed, all day...annoying everyone within earshot! This was my favorite find of the day! Of course, I had to climb a split-rail fence and sneak into someone's yard...good thing I didn't see the 'Beware of Dog' sign 'til after....yikes! But isn't this sweet? And romantic....

The procrastination bug has bitten, and bitten hard! Other than just walking through the garden with my camera, I've been flaking out with the year-end chores. Leaf clean up, trimming, mulching....all things necessary to put the garden down for a deep sleep. And I keep thinking I still have plenty of time to plant my bulbs!

Instead, I'm out touring gardens in my free time....like this one in south Jersey!

Clusters of pearls are what these beauty berries remind me of... Amazing that only an hour south, annuals are still looking great!
This pond was pretty shallow but look how healthy these kois are! They were extremely hungry...following me with their big eyes and opened mouths. Sorry guys, nothing good in my pockets.

So what's my excuse for neglecting the garden? Can I blame it on shorter days? Adjusting to daylight savings is easy...what's one less hour of sleep for this insomniac...it's the time I can spend outdoors after work that I miss. Pitch dark now by 5pm...that's the hard part!

Too busy with work, home projects, crafts, etc. etc....

Okay, I'll come clean and admit it....I've been LAZY!!!

But, in order to get beauties like these....

I must plant these! Pronto! Before the ground freezes...

Am I alone in my procrastination? Have you, too, been bitten? Somehow, I think some of you can relate....

Rise and Shine!

Nothing like a 5am walk to get your heart racing! And I don't mean from the exercise! Up and out the door with Bandit in total darkness was how this day started. I am not easily spooked so no thought at all given to the fact that I could barely see beyond arm's length. But, soon my eyes adjusted, and I found the cold morning air quite exhilarating.

Too engrossed in my audio book, I wasn't aware that Bandit sensed something in the bushes! Suddenly, the still, peaceful quiet was rudely interrupted with his best 'protecting my mommy' voice! And for a 13-lb. ball of fluff, he's quite loud! Sorry neighbors!

So, do I turn and run back the way I came? NO, silly! Being the brave girl that I am...or just plain crazy!...I pull out my camera and aim it at the bushes, snapping away! Maybe it's just a raccoon! A fox? Possibly a bear!

Hmph...no such luck! Here's the culprit!

Drats! Just another deer! Or maybe an alien in disguise!!

Another hour or so later, Mr. Sun is out, but just barely. I'm chilled now and ready to head back. So is little Bandit.

Back in my garden, there's still color to be found...mostly in the form of foliage.

After his quick rest, Bandit was rearing to go again. As soon as I opened the door, off he went, chasing more intruders! And boy, do they run!!Many chores on my To Do List but, first, someone desperately needs a warm bath! Then I'll take care of Bandit's feet...lol! Oooh, the joys of owning a little white fluff!So, friends, I hope you realize that I was willing to risk my life...hey, it could've been a bear!...all for the sake of a good picture/post...just sayin'! Maybe next time! Happy Day, all!

Chasing Fire...

On a recent drive home, I was blinded by the reflection in the rear view mirror. So busy in my thoughts that I somehow missed the blaze going on behind me! And, of course, I now HAD to capture this amazing view. But going 70mph on a busy highway made pulling over quite impossible! Thank goodness I knew of an upcoming exit. But time was running out quick!
The red light allowing me to pull a U-ey lasted an eternity...isn't that always the case?!

Now on a road paralleling the highway, I was determined to chase this fire in the sky. Again, obstacles found their way into ruining my perfect picture~telephone poles, buildings, oncoming cars! And more time lost...

Oooh, a crest in the next turn! Tricky angle but doable...Now pulled over and sitting on my opened window ledge of a door, my back leaned way out, I had the perfect view! Tell me you wouldn't have done the same...even with cars whizzing by!

Was this view worth it?

Absolutely! For me! How could I resist not sitting and staring at one of the most gorgeous sunsets I've ever seen! Could you?

Lost in my thoughts again, until the voice of a 15-year passenger impatiently asked "Can we go home now?!" Darn them kids!!

Saying Goodbye....

Once I flip my calendar to November, I find the rest of the year quickly runs its course. Maybe it's the crazy-busy activities of Thanksgiving and Christmas that help speed the months along but I also think it's because I'm sadly saying goodbye to the garden and eagerly anticipating its return come Spring. There are still beautiful foliage to enjoy, at least in my neck of the woods. But soon, these deciduous branches will lay bare, and oh how we will miss their multi-colored coats! Seemingly overnight, the glowing fans of this gingko tree will create a golden carpet at its trunk, which in itself, is a beautiful sight.

Though presently living up to their name, these burning bushes will soon be naked, huddling tight and shivering through winter without their dense, fiery coat of red. Haphazard blooms found here and there but the majority of plants/flowers have bid their farewell and settled in for the duration. The annual visitors, sadly, make no plans to return.

A final visit from this colorful moth brought me much joy.As do the fruits and berries decorating these trees. Captured here for posterity before they are picked clean by our feathered friends ;)

My collection of chrysanthemums vary somewhat, but mostly, I go for bold, rich colors.With the daisy-like mums being my favorite!Of course you need white ones to make a vase arrangement 'go together'. Hey, how'd that little geranium sneak in there! Imagine my surprise to find this beautiful rose in bloom! Five days later, they still look great on my bedside table. And somehow, attending the last daylily club (GSDG) meeting of the year, makes saying goodbye to the garden that much more final. But, as we gardeners know, now begins the fun phase of dreaming and planning our projects for 2010. My 'Wish List' of daylilies increased tenfold...thanks to our wonderful speaker on hybridizing...Mike Huben. I can't wait for that first pollen cross next summer! Have yourselves a great week and enjoy the last Hurrah of Autumn!

The historical Red Mill in Clinton becomes home for ghosts and ghouls every October. This year's theme is Asylum of Terror. In it's 19th season, this fundraiser is what keeps the Mill maintained and in operation for the publics' enjoyment year round.I'm just one of the many volunteers that help with set-painting, decorating, and my favorite, make-up, for the amazing actors who put together a first-class performance. The set gets built a few weeks before Opening Night.Then the painting fun begins. Funny how I always end up with jobs that require me climbing a ladder! All glow-in-the-dark paint being used here. The tour runs about 30 minutes but the line getting to the front can sometimes take 3-4 hours! An event not for the faint-hearted. We do WARN no kids under 6 and no preggers! The hayride through the cemetary, complete with black lights and Vincent Price, is pretty awesome! Oh, please meet my boyfriend...he's a great listener! And our very serious Director, Jen! Can you tell I hate this gig...not having any fun at all...none! Not so scary in the daylight... ...much better at night! Watch your step, please And beware of clowns lurking behind trees... A lovely couple, eh? They'll even babysit for free! This is Charlie...the maggots eating his flesh are made from plaster and oatmeal...yum!

Shhh...trade secrets! Perfect eerie sky for a night of spooking... But just to be safe...better say your prayers...Mua ha ha!

Last Friday night was great success. With Saturday, came torrential rain and lightning! We had to delay opening for an hour..which made the crowd very antsy...but, safety first! Hopefully, this Friday will be a record-breaking finale. If you're ever in the area, check us out! I'll even get you to the front of the line ;)

California Dreamin....

Hey everyone! Did my visit to California really take place? It's already just a blur! I guess the proof is in the pictures below...
I flew out of Newark very apprehensively as it was raining and the fog was thick! But the endless blue above the clouds....WOW! Too bad my window was streaky.

Six hours later, the view of San Diego Harbor was a wonderful, welcoming sign.

Though my camera worked overtime on family photos, I'll just share with you the pretty landscapes. It's always so great to return to the place that encapsulates your youth. Seeing high school friends takes me back to a time when we were young and carefree. And how funny now that some of us were not only discussing our grown-up children but the prospect of becoming....EGADS....grandparents!

How is this possible?!

Early morning walks on the beach was what I longed to do! But I'd forgotten how foggy the coast can be!

It didn't help that there is a power plant 1/2 mile down the road. This I don't miss...

The beach was a daily destination for me...sometimes even twice. Taking walks, mainly checking out the surfers...haha! Unfortunately, most of them were NOT spring chickens, mind you! Nope, not your average sun bleached, long-haired surfer dudes! (Think Spicoli...anyone??)

Amazing that by 7am, parking lots were filled with guys suiting up and waxing boards. And by the models of their cars, I'm certain these were executive types trying to catch that perfect wave before their 9-5 shift. I'd forgotten how serious surfing can be!

And even more serious, scuba diving!I find it unbelievable that my whole family lives only 10 minutes from this beautiful paradise and yet never make time to visit! Something about it being "too sandy"....can you imagine?!

Another major perk when visiting home? The requirement to eat, eat, eat! No matter our age, Mom's home cooking beats any 5-star restaurant! Don't you agree? Ha Xuan, you would appreciate my big steaming bowl of 'Pho' and 'goi cuon' on a daily basis!

So, with my triple(!) intake of calories, I spent many hours walking along the surfs' edge~

just me and my.... ....shadow! Alright, I think we DO need at least one flower photo.

So, for the orchid lovers...In a blink of an eye, my 5 day visit came to an end :(

The last sunset from Mom's patio....sighBack to my window seat with the pretty view. Farewell, Pacific Coast... A cold and wet weekend forecast and I can actually hear the wind howling outside as I type. A giant Blue Jay just landed 5 ft. away on this choke berry shrub but flew off just as I came back with the camera! Back to life as I know it in NJ but yours truly will be California dreamin'...

And in the words of Arnold....hope that

"I'll be back" real soon!

We've been thinking how sad it is that Summer is gone but look around and it's so evident that Fall has so much to offer and we are instantly cheered...I know I am! Sure, mums are the mainstay of my Fall garden but there is so much more being offered! Think grasses, aster, ornamental kale, berries, pansies....the list goes on and on!

Speaking of mums, these have been blooming for over a month but now with 'Montauk Daisies' keeping them company, they just pop! At almost 3ft(!), bright and cheerful Melapodiums never looked so good...and they are all volunteers! Can't beat free plants! "Enough pics of Bandit....it's my turn!" Yep, that's what Lacey said! Lovely swallowtails still hanging about... Ever notice how many different shades of red there are in one cluster of 'Autumn Joy' sedum? YAY for dahlias! Many more buds left to open....I hope! But last bloom on 'Day Breaker' rose....*sad sigh* This guy cheered me up with a game of Peek-A-Boo!

"Anemonemone"...quoting Disney's Nemo...love that movie! Wild goldenrod...the bane of my fall allergies! But, I'll suffer gladly, for the blooms are beautiful in arrangements.

Doctor....I Can't Sleep!

I am wide awake and it's 3am! It's happening more and more...I don't like it! So what to do except this! Gee, if only we could get paid for blogging..we'd do it 24/7 right?

For the last week, after every couple of functions on the keyboard, I get a warning that I'm running low on disk space. Deleting files from the hard drive is kind of confusing since I'm not sure which ones are junk. Weeding through my photo files will save alot of room. Each month's file has about 1,000 pics so I'm deleting a ton of them! Email in-box is also a big culprit. This will take time so, at least for tonight, I have something to do!

We live in one of the highest points in Clinton, and just a few streets over, homes have this view of the reservoir! I was gardening last week when I noticed the pretty pink cast in the sky so in I ran for the car keys and camera and was just in time to capture this sunset. Going... Going... Gone! Too bad they're blurry!This blooming weed is all over my yard. Mr_Subj just did a post identifying it. I pull out tons but leave some to bloom for late interest, and they look great in arrangements. See...very similar to baby's breath. I just threw them together with some sedum, verbena and chinese lantern pods. Don't know why I'm not sleeping well. My schedule has been kind of crazy too so I SHOULD be exhausted. Could it have anything to do with my baby being away at college? You bet! So if I don't mention it, would you notice that her dress is on backwards here?! I miss you, kiddo! My little white fluff ball of a shadow is right here beside me though. Bandit was in snoring mode but as soon as I crept out of bed, he was up! Don't you just love that in a pet? Well, okay....maybe NOT when you really want some privacy...lol!I wouldn't think I'm alone in this wide-eyed dilemma...I bet some of you can totally relate...right?

You just know I'll be a walking zombie come 2pm! Yawning, puffy bags under the eyes, sleeping at my desk...but, let's not go there!I found this praying mantis getting ready to take a chomp on this cicada...WARNING...kinda gross! Ewww...

Driving home a few nights ago, I noticed the cloudscapes were kind of eerie, but also kind of pretty. So I had to pull over and trek through some very prickly brush to find this! I sat a bit admiring the view but it got dark fast and I was creeping myself out! This is exactly what you tell your kids NOT to do...

On the news the other night, I saw a story about a facility in NYC that caters to all-night insomniacs. You check in after dark. Dinner is served at midnight, then activities til sunrise! Sounds like a fun club! Wonder if the doc will write me a Rx.
